VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY INTRODUCTION TO COACHING
WHAT IS LIFE COACHING?
Life Coaching is a process of facilitating people in discovering the answers witin themselves regarding the aspects of their lives that they are not saisfied with and wish to make changes to, the aspects that they are not paying sufficient attention to, and what steps are necessary to strike a reasonable compromise across all the critical aspects that lead to a balanced lifestyle. It is a process of providing a comfortable environment in which to discuss these issues, face to face or by telephone, and then a structured support systems including a number of further sessions to ensure that the agreed steps are turned into action, or are reviewed and changed and new committments made if required.
typically a series of one-to-one coaching sessions with a trained professional, usually face-to-face but with the opportunity to conduct some sessions by telephone if dictated by circumstances. The intention of coaching is, through the use of a constructive coach-coachee relationship, to work with the client in a practical, forward-looking way to gain clarity on what currently isn't working or disatisfies the client and to facilitate her or him in developing realistic goals and strategies for implimenting them in order to bring balance into the clients life. The coaching relationship provides a powerful support system to ensure that the client continues to make progress in the right direction after the initial period of enthusiasm!
A combination of tools and techniques are used in order to achieve this, helping the client to gain insights on current perspectives, to challenge beliefs and to gain clarity on what is currently blocking progress. The coach then works with the client in order to consider and evaluate potential solutions.
As I see it, life coaching aims to help you achieve clarity and confidence to work through issues that are holding you back from enjoying a challenging and harmonious life. Life coaching is not about making simplistic judgments about someone's life and telling that person how they ought to live it. The majority of coaches set out to fix what is wrong with people. I don't believe in that approach at all.
The following is the basis for all successful coaching:
i) A shared feeling of trust and empathy between client and coach.
ii) A relationship of equality between client and coach.
iii) A desire on the client's part to focus on the future, while acknowledging the effects of the past.
iv) A willingness by the client to work through challenging issues towards empowerment, self-confidence and a happier, more productive life.
v) A belief in people's ability to have within themselves the answers to all their perceived difficulties and problems, and with appropriate facilitation to have the ability to articulate those answers.
While Life Coaching is often utilised to tackle general Life situations it is also commonly used as a method for dealing with other specific areas such as:
 Career Coaching.
 Stress Management Coaching.
 Career Change Coaching.
