Come and explore the magic of the Languedoc and the wonderful heritage left by Maria Magdalene and the Cathars.
Legend States:
"After the ascension of Christ, Mary Magdalene, her sister Martha, her brother Lazarus, Mary Jacobe, sister of the Virgin Mary, Salome, mother of the apostles and Jean Jacques Maximin, one of the 72 disciples, Marcelle, Sidonius, and others, left Jerusalem because of the persecution that Christians endured. But in Joppa, they were captured by the infidels and thrown into a boat without sail or oar. With God's help, the ship crossed the Mediterranean without incident and ran aground in the Camargue. On the beach, they erected an altar made of clay to celebrate their mysterious arrival, and then after some time, they dispersed. Maximin went to Aix, Mary Magdalene retired to the Sainte Baume, Lazarus went to Marseille and Martha to Tarascon. Mary Salome and Mary Jacobe remained on the beach with their servant Sara. They kept with them, the chief Jacques le Majeur, son of Mary Salome and the leader of Three Dreamers. After an austere life of hard work and prayers, they died and were buried on site. Later a church was built at this location."
She is said to have taught the true teaching of the Christ Consciousness and 'The Way', which is said to have been the basis in later times for the Spiritual Beliefs and way of life of the Cathars.
Catharism spread throughout the Languedoc in the 12 Century. Cathars won the heart of the people from all levels of society who appreciated lack of rich among the ecclesiastics, admired their exemplary life and understood their teachings which were given in common language. Faced with a serious threat the Catholic Church sought to rid the area of the 'heretics' and after a series of failed negoitations in January 1208 Pope Innocent III instigated a Crusade against the Cathars who to all intents and purposes were wiped out between then and 1321. The Legacy that they have left us is an extraordinary one and we will take a Voyage of Discovery to explore this and connect with what this area has to offer as a result.
